Editorial Review:

Amazon.com:
This emotionally moving romantic drama was adapted by William Nicholson from his own acclaimed play, based upon the real-life romance (during the 1950s) between the British writer C.S. Lewis and a divorced American poet named Joy Gresham. Best known for writing The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, Lewis (Anthony Hopkins) is living comfortably as a respected Oxford don, his academic lifestyle a kind of shell protecting him from the emotional risk of love. Joy Gresham (Debra Winger) arrives at Oxford as an avid admirer of Lewis's writing, and the safety of his collegiate routine is quickly disrupted when Lewis realizes that he's fallen deeply and unexpectedly in love. Their courtship is uniquely engaging; he's shy and uncertain, she's outspoken and bold. But when Joy is diagnosed with cancer, Lewis's Christian faith is put to the test--he cannot fathom why their happiness together would be so drastically challenged. Together, they find a way to accept and honor the time they have shared together, and under the sensitive direction of Richard Attenborough, Shadowlands arrives at a conclusion that is both heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time. Hopkins and Winger are equally superb in this absorbing story of personal and spiritual transformation--a story previously filmed for British television in 1985, with Joss Ackland and Claire Bloom. --Jeff Shannon

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - This film makes everybody cry...
Naysayers may complain that the plot is creaky and the set-ups old-fashioned, but nobody can wring out tears like Debra Winger. She never plays a false note and she forces a performance out of Anthony Hopkins like I never thought possible. I recently invited some very hard-hearted friends over to see this, all men, and they were all sobbing by the end. It isn't that the premise was romantic, but rather that it was life-affirming while dealing with death and despair.

What a great cleanse for us musty old-fashioned types.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Sunday night sob-fest.
Although this is the 126th review of this fine film, please don't mistake my review title as a criticism of the film. As other reviewers here have said, this is a rare movie that REALLY tells it like it is re: what constitutes real, living, loving relationships and what they give and take from us. I can only repeat the movie's closing line: "The pain now is part of the happiness then. That's the deal." That says more than just about any multi-hundred paged book ever could. Hopkins and Winger and even the young lad all played their roles to perfection. A great movie, but don't ferget yer hankies! (Fellas, save this one for Valentine's Day or your wedding anniversary, you generate bookoo kisses from yer lady!!!)AND WHY IS THIS OOP ON DVD!!! WRONG!!!!! (I have a VHS copy I bought years ago. I have to get a used DVD 'cos if the tape should break or wear ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Not so great on HD
NOt the fault of the seller--DVD and package was in great shape. We were happy to own one of our own favorite movies and authors. The quality of the film itself seemed very unsuited for our HDTV. Great love story, though.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Awesome Movie
This is an excellent portrayal of the real life struggles of faith. Brilliant cast and a true story. Warning: Tissues required.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Hopkins captures the essence of Lewis' spirit
This is probably my favorite movie of all time. C. S. Lewis was a remarkable man and a writer without peer. His work and life have inspired many to turn to God and deepen their own spiritual journey.

Anthony Hopkins, possibly the best actor of our time, has captured the essence of Lewis' faith and character. Debra Winger is surprisingly vivid as the one woman Lewis ever loved.

Unfortunately this movie has a limited release and not many people have seen it. I am happy that Amazon had it available, as I searched video stores for it in vain.
